The basic additional requirements are a neutral wire at switch points and a 5 cm deep back box for smart switches. Wireless smart home systems using Zigbee, Thread, or Matter work on a local home network, not directly on the internet. All automations, scenes, schedules, and sensor-based actions continue to function normally even if the internet is down. Internet access is only required for remote control when you’re outside the home. Without internet, the house remains fully operational on the local network.
